I bought this car new in April of 1993 and have done all of my own maintenance. As of April, 2002 it has over 71,000 miles on it and still has the original tires. Yes, I drive it reasonably and get good gas mileage - boooring!

While changing the timing belt I found that I needed a special tool from Mazda to remove the flange behind the crankshaft timing belt pulley. Both my local dealer and Mazda of America refused to sell me the tool, so I made one out of a piece of scrap plywood I found in my garage. Below are the details of the tool as well as a picture of it in use.

The tool: 5"X18"X3/8" plywood. I also purchased 4 6mm X 30mm cap screws to attach it to the crankshaft timing belt pulley flange. Then, I used a 21mm socket to outline a center hole, and used the pulley plate to outline holes for the cap screws. Using this tool you can use a breaker bar with a 21mm socket to remove the flange without moving the crankshaft. Also be careful not to move either camshaft pulley while performing this procedure. Email me if you want to discuss it. Photo  copyright © John Baughman.
